Biography

Brian L. Burgess of Montpelier, Washington County was born in Washington D.C. in January of 1951.  He attended elementary and high schools in Vienna, Virginia.  In 1973, he received a B.A. from the College of Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts and a J.D. from Villanova University School of Law in 1976. Before his appointment to the bench as a District Court Judge in 1992, he served as Deputy Attorney General (1985-1992), Commissioner, and prior Deputy Commissioner, of the Department of Labor and Industry (1983-1985), Assistant Attorney General (1978-1983), staff attorney for Vermont’s social welfare department (1978), and associate in the offices of Timothy J. O’Connor, Jr. Esq. (1976-1977), and Donovan & O’Connor (1977-1978).  He served as the Vermont Administrative Trial Judge from 2004, until appointed as Associate Justice to the Vermont Supreme Court on July 8, 2005, by Governor James H. Douglas.
